How to Add Speaking to Your Business - The First Steps

How to Add Speaking to Your Business

If you're a small business owner looking to add speaking to your business but you have no idea where to start, today I'm going to help you figure out what steps you should be taking first and why.

Let’s say that you asked me, “Jess, how do I get started as a speaker? How do I add speaking to my business?” First, I'm going to ask you to pump the brakes for a second. Speaking is not cookie cutter and one answer will not fit for everyone. You have your own message, your own business, and your own reasons for wanting to take the stage.

The first thing I want to know is: Why do you want to speak?

There are three paths you may want to go down and I want to be sure I’m sending you on the journey that is best fit for you.

  1. Maybe want to speak because you want to increase your influence and visibility. As a business owner, you want to get in front of potential clients.
  2. Maybe you have products and services (like a book or an online course) that you want to sell to your audience. For you, taking the stage may be an opportunity for you to start selling your products to a larger platform.
  3. Maybe you're looking to add a new stream of revenue to your business and you want speaking opportunities that pay upfront.

Let's take a minute to figure out why it is you want to speak. This helps us determine exactly what steps you should be taking. There may be some overlap when you’re looking at these three options.

Maybe you're setting out to increase your influence, but if you sold a few courses along the way you wouldn't be upset, right? There's nothing wrong with dabbling in multiple paths. However, in order to get you the best results, we need to be very clear in the action steps we’re going to take.  By first figuring out what the end goal is, we can create a strategic plan of attack.

If you're not sure which one of those paths you fit into, just click the link below. I've created a quick, 10 question quiz that does the hard work for you. Just answer the questions honestly and it will tell you exactly what tier you fall into and what your next steps should be.
