Ep 135: How to Build an Engaged Remote Team (ft. Tianna Tye)
As you continue to step into your role as the leader of your business, how confident are you in making new hires and keeping your team members engaged? How do you feel about keeping your remote team members engaged even if you've never met in person?
We take a lot of pride here at The Public Speaking Strategist in the company culture we have established. We work hard to keep our team members motivated, engaged, and connected, even though we're located all around the world. While I don't have a secret formula to share with you for achieving something similar within your own company, I want to support you in leading your team confidently, even when you can't be in the same room.
In this week's episode of The Speak to Scale Podcast, I've brought on a very special guest, who's going to break down exactly how you can hire and lead a remote team. If you haven't already met Tiana Tye, she is an Industrial-Organizational Psychologist and Team Dynamics Consultant from Atlanta, GA. She leverages human psychology and data-backed strategies to help online business owners lead their team better than their last boss!
Tianna’s expertise in hiring, leadership, and virtual teams make her a CEO’s secret weapon for managing all things on the “people” side of the business. When she’s not creating content via her podcast TyePod or curating team retreats, you can find her cuddling her two dogs and her firefighter husband with a nice glass of Cabernet.

How to Build a Team as a Small Business Owner
For many small business owners and speakers, we wait until it's too late to hire. We worry about being responsible for someone else's livelihood and if we have the cash flow to truly sustain them for the long haul.
Online business owners are notorious for hiring based solely on recommendations. For example, your friend has a virtual assistant that she loves. You realize that you, too, need a virtual assistant so you hire the same VA assuming you'll have a great working relationship, just like your friend does. Just because your friend has a great working relationship with her, doesn't mean that you're going to match with that VA in the same way. Proper personality pairing plays a big role in finding the right team members for our businesses.
How to Know When it's Time to Start Hiring
You know you're ready to start hiring if the cost of your own time to do an activity outweighs what it would cost to bring someone in to do that same task. Pay attention to how much time (and money) it's costing you to do the daily tasks inside of your business. Are you ready to start outsourcing some of those items? Waiting until the last minute and hiring out of desperation typically results in a bad fit, especially in the online space.
Unfortunately, a lot of entrepreneurs don't have time to do some of the more important CO tasks in their business. If you're spending your entire week working inside of your business and keeping up with the piled-up tasks, you likely don't have time to set goals and lead your company to achieve them. If you're feeling stuck in the day-to-day hustle and are out of touch with your bigger CEO role, it's time to assess where you're spending your time each week. This is a big single that it may be time to start building that team, friend.

How to Prepare for Hiring Your First (or Next) Team Member
Before you start the hiring process, get clear on your mission, your vision, and your core values. You can't expect your team to carry out your vision if they don't know what it is. This also helps you make hires that believe in your mission and value similar beliefs. Get clear on what is most important to you and your company so that you can hire team members that are in alignment with where you're heading.
