Ep 147 Repurposing Summit Presentations (ft. Nicole Batey)

"Now what?"

This is a question about summits that I get all the time inside our Speaking Strategy Academy. You get invited to present at a virtual summit or event, and you spend all that time crafting a presentation, preparing for the event, and generally pouring your best ideas into it. But then what?

Today's guest realized that we as speakers are missing a huge opportunity when it comes to what we do after those virtual summit presentations.

If you loved this episode and it motivated you to work on more polished presentations, I’d love for you to leave a review on iTunes and tell me about your biggest takeaway. Take a screenshot of you listening on your device, post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @jessicarasdall.

Nursing and events during a pandemic

Nicole Batey helps female founders relaunch their offers to a community of engaged attendees through "Oprah-level virtual summits," as she calls them. Nicole doesn't just help support killer virtual events, though — she's also a registered nurse.

How did she find herself in the world of virtual events? Well, she got bored and needed a creative outlet. She heard about virtual events (pre-COVID) and decided to give it a try. What she found was that people really wanted to connect in new ways with their audience and virtual summits give a new level of connection.

She loved the connections between the host and the speaker, the host and attendees, the speakers and attendees — all of it. And she continues to work full-time as an RN (during a pandemic, no less), Nicole now makes connections with women who want to make a difference in their audience's lives.

During the big shift from in-person to virtual events, though, Nicole noticed that most speakers were pouring all their energy into their presentations... and then not using them again. While these great presentations were awesome for the summits she helped support, they weren't the most sustainable way for speakers to grow their reach.

That's where repurposing comes in.

Leveraging the value of your presentation

You want to prepare a presentation that makes an impact and that people can relate to. That's why we put a lot of time into these virtual presentations — but then we don't do anything with it, as Nicole really saw when she was focusing on summits for clients.

However, it's possible to create a ton of content from your ONE presentation. Best of all, you can use it again and again.

A note: Before you repurpose that summit talk, make sure you consider your speaker agreement. You want to make sure you can use and publish that content. Some summits may request that they "own" the content, so you need to check that before you go and repurpose your presentation.

How to repurpose presentation content

As Nicole explained in this episode, you have an endless amount of content to pull from after you've appeared on a virtual summit. But how do you use it?

Step #1: Share the crap out of it.

As Nicole put it, you better be using your summit content everywhere. While it might seem like you're repeating yourself everywhere, most people won't see everything you post or share. There will always be that one person who comes to you today, and who didn't hear any of your messaging. There will always be that one person who needs to hear the same message for the 100th time before it actually sinks in.

Step #2: Use your transcript.

Get your presentation audio turned into a transcript (we love Otter.ai!) and really read through those main points you make. You can turn it into a transcript and have that content DONE because it's already written for you. Boom.

Step #3: Break it up.

You can turn one point from your presentation into a 4-slide carousel or a Reels video. An Instagram series. An email. You don't have to just use the video from the presentation; use the content that you created for it. Plus, you can cut up the video, add text captions, emails, blogs, whatever. Bonus points for turning it into a podcast!

Whatever you do, just turn that presentation into multiple pieces of content in different mediums. That presentation alone can create the base of a greater content strategy.

What's stopping you?

During our conversation, Nicole and I also talked about why more speakers aren't leveraging all of this great content. It all boils down to fear — at least, in our opinions.

Maybe you're afraid the hosts of your summit won't like that you're reusing the videos. Or maybe you're afraid about how much time it will take to repurpose it all. Maybe you're afraid that people will hear the same message and get bored with you.

We hope that we busted those fears before in our conversation, but just in case you need a recap: Ask for permission to use your summit materials in your speaker agreement. Turn your audio into a transcript to cut down on content creation time. And people won't get bored with you — they're not seeing everything you create.

Truly worried that you'll sound like a broken record? We have a solve for that, too: Take your presentation and go deeper with it. You can create workshops or other speaking opportunities. You can offer that audience the ability to go deeper with paid coaching, VIP days, or masterclasses. But let your summit presentation lay a really great base for your expertise and your talking points, and then build from there.

Let your virtual presentations support your content

Nicole's deep dive into how to repurpose presentation content is SO valuable. She also was nice enough to share her resource, Create your 30 Day Content Calendar from your Last Summit Presentation. Instead of wondering how to pull out those gems and share them on blogs, social, podcasts, emails, etc. download this awesome calendar and get it all figured out!

I also highly recommend that you follow Nicole on Facebook and Instagram for more advice on rocking your virtual summits.
